Breeders (and pet owners alike)

Lilac and Chocolate Ragdolls are quite rare and easily mistaken for blue and seal colors.

To DNA test your Ragdoll kitten or Ragdoll Cat, simply go the UCDavis online, open an account and start the process of DNA testing. It is a simple cheek swab test done with Q-tips, so you do it all yourself and then send it into the lab and await your results. Results take approximately two weeks and are sent via e-mail, followed by the originals in the mail.

Some tips:

1. use only Q-tips brand swabs (others may give strange results)

2. wait at least 1/2 hour, if not 1 hour after eating or drinking

3. do not use any plastic when sending to the lab (only paper) even in the envelope

4. send using overnight courier service

REMEMBER: the safest way to ensure a true chocolate or lilac Ragdoll is to deal with a reputable breeder, known to carry these dilutes in their program AND one who is able to distinguish them from the traditional blue and seal colors.

By following two parents to where they intersect in the white area, you can see all the possible genetic outcomes of the kittens of such parents. DNA testing is an absolute must for carriers, unless one immediate parent IS a true chocolate or lilac (not a carrier).
