Home of True Chocolate & Lilac Ragdolls
Many breeders claim to have chocolate and lilac Ragdolls. They DO NOT !
These two colors are very difficult to obtain, both parents must
have the recessive, and since the Ragdoll takes 2+ years for its coat
color to obtain full coloring, many of these cats unfortunately turn
out to be simply seal and blue in color.

Buyers Beware !!
As pet Ragdolls this may not matter, as BREEDERS this is extremely
important !!
Then the question remains, “How do I know I have a “true” or “real”
chocolate or lilac?” The answer is DNA test the cat before you buy,
OR deal with a reputable breeder known to
truly have these diluted colors in their breeding program and knows
how to distinguish the two colors.
Carriers of the recessive can not be identified without
DNA testing unless one direct parent IS a true chocolate or
lilac cat. Trusted chocolate/lilac sources stem from outcrosses to the
Birman, Balinese or Persian used long before any DNA testing became
available as a reliable means to test for these diluted colors. By using
these outcrosses, true lilac & chocolate coloration was established
along with a wider range of alleles for phenotypes
otherwise not available to the Ragdoll breed.
Chocolate and Lilac Ragdolls are expensive, so don't you want to
ensure you are purchasing an authentic kitten in these colors? Bells
and whistles should be ringing if the price is cheap OR the breeder is
new and inexperienced.
A final note ... chocolate is a recessive gene ... lilac is a
complete color (there is NO lilac gene)! |
